INTERLUDE: Deep Space

Once again, power flowed through the huge structure, only this time the energies were directed to propulsion rather than destruction. The ship moved with ponderous deliberation, but there was no hurry. The potential threat of the infestation had been neutralized, and the destroyers watched the planet to insure against surprises.

It was time to begin the next phase of operations. They would sample the Resource to determine its quality and abundance. In the great bays at the bottom of the huge vessel, thousands of Resource Collectors fired up their reactors, tested their systems, and announced their readiness. The order was given, and the swarms of vessels launched and assumed trajectories that would take them to points scattered far and wide across the world below.

Some few would inevitably be lost; the infection was neutralized but that did not mean that it had ceased to exist. This was acceptable; there were tens of thousands more to take their place. Once the initial wave of samples had returned they would better know where to focus their efforts. Then the Harvest could begin in earnest.
